I’ll be entering the last semester of my fellowship in the autumn, and I have a lot planned already. I’m trying to submit a grant to the ESRC by the beginning of Autumn and I’ll be writing up my experiments for publication as well. I’ve also got a couple of collaborative manuscripts in the works which are getting close to submission.

As I look back on my time as a postdoc at Newcastle, I can see how much I’ve learned and grown. I feel like I am overflowing with ideas for both research and scholarship, and I’ve struck out in new directions that complement my expertise and help pull together my research programme into something that suits me and my career goals. I’m not sure what the future holds, and that’s certainly a bit of a stressor, but I’ve begun to feel more confident that there could be a place for me to stay in academia. I certainly hope there is, because I have fallen in love with teaching methods, quantitative analytical skills, and statistics in R. I’ve got reams of ideas for how to integrate these pedagogical goals with teaching psycholinguistics, phonetics, and syntax… I just need an outlet now!

It’s been fabulous being able to concentrate on my research, but as you can see from my main activities in the past year, I really do miss teaching. I think teaching, for me, is a way of processing and consolidating the research I’m doing — in a sense, getting to see my students’ perspectives on linguistics and statistics helps me to look at my own work with fresh eyes and new invigorated energy. What a treat to be able to teach and do research for a living!

Summer progress

A lot has happened since my last update. This spring semester was a bit disjointed, but I finished collecting eye-tracking data from my general population sample and presented at CUNY2018. I got a lot of good feedback and enjoyed spending time with my colleagues in the US.

Ethics of researching gender as a syntactician

This summer, I’ve submitted a few papers, though I haven’t heard back on two of them yet. Here’s the LingBuzz page for the preprint of Syntactic and cognitive issues in investigating gendered coreference. This is a squib on how to frame human gender going forward for research that concerns grammatical and human gender, with an eye to domain-general cognition. In particular, I think it’s crucial that work on this area acknowledge the conceptual overlaps between grammar, cultural categories, biology, and social sensitivity and justice. It can be easy for syntacticians and psycholinguists to focus on syntactic features while ignoring how our discussions of these features affects transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people. Even if it’s entirely unintentional, it creates a hostile environment for colleagues and members of the wider community. We’re better than that, but to move forward I believe a framework for ethical investigation must be made explicit.

Teaching R, methods, and analysis

The other main project I’ve been working on is integrating updated quantitative analysis into the postgraduate curriculum here at Newcastle and in the general linguistics community.

  • In March, I led a workshop with Nick Riches on Internet Methods for conducting experiments, which touched on MTurk, Ibex Farm, Inquisit, and other similar tools.
  • In June, Jalal Al-Tamimi, Danielle Turton, Nick Riches and I organised and implemented a two-day postgraduate workshop on using R for analysis, including tidyverse, text mining, and linear regression. (Adventures in R)
  • In September and October, I will be hosting a series of tutorials (RfficeHours) geared to familiarising staff with R so they can support their students and conduct their own analyses. I intend on hosting RfficeHours throughout the year, in order to keep staff fresh and help boost support for R at the School and Faculty level as we’re also providing postgraduate support through Faculty training workshops.
  • Next year, in January, I will be running a five-day mini-course on experimental syntax methodology and analysis in R at the Universitat AutĂČnoma de Barcelona, invited by Àngel Gallego. Materials for this mini-course will be made available in January.

LSA 2018 Annual Meeting

What an amazing conference! I presented several papers and participated in the Five Minute Linguist competition, which was incredibly fun. (I highly recommend submitting your own work at future meetings.) Since my presentations tend to get buried on this page, I thought I would assemble links in a convenient place:

Ackerman & Yoshida: Detecting elusive judgments with binary decisions
(part of the organized session “Understanding Judgment Data in Syntax and Semantics: Insights from Experimental Methodologies”)

This study explores the relationship between judgments reported by linguists in published articles and judgments reported by experimental participants in the lab. In this study, two cases in English are investigated in which formal syntactic explanations have not been consistently confirmed in formal experimental studies: the apparent production-comprehension split in the distribution of resumptive pronouns in island contexts, and the amnestying effect of an additional wh-word on violations of the Superiority Condition. By employing a binary forced-choice methodology which mimics acceptability judgements of the formal syntax literature (unlike a scalar rating methodology), the authors confirm that resumptive pronoun and superiority phenomena are consistent with the predictions made by the formal syntax literature in some environments.

The adverbial suffix –ly and the adjectival suffix –ly‚ typically do not combine (e.g., *ghost+ly‚+ly; ‘in a ghostlike manner’). However, phonologically similar strings are attested when one /li/ string is part of the word stem (jollily, compared to: ?smellily, *lovelily). Does morphological structure modulate the acceptability of these words independently from the impact of phonological or usage-based constraints? In two experiments, jolly-type stems are rated more acceptable than smell- and love-type stems, which did not significantly differ from each other. A combination of phonological constraints and increased morphological complexity can account for the observed pattern.

Ackerman, Riches & Wallenberg: Coreference dependency formation is modulated by experience with variation in human gender

What knowledge is accessed and checked during gendered coreference dependency formation? English encodes information about gender in pronouns and names, and coreference dependency formation relies on antecedent gender of matching that of the anaphor. However, human gender is not binary, and nonbinary genders are increasing in visibility. We investigate whether nonstandard coreference dependencies are processed differentially across the population. We find higher acceptability among people with regular contact with transgender/nonbinary communities, particularly younger speakers. We suggest experience with gender variation influences speakers’ mental representations of gender and these nuanced representations are what is accessed during gendered coreference dependency formation.

HejnĂĄ, Cochrane, Ackerman & Wallenberg: A bio-social account of hormonal effects on sound change from below

Analyses of sex/gender on language change are historically restricted to social factors, often confounding sex and gender and assuming that man/woman categories are explanatory. This literature has noted and replicated a pattern of women leading sound change from below the level of consciousness, but why this pattern should arise remains unclear. We present a model whereby social and biological factors interact and affect language change; consequently, the observed sex/gender effect is epiphenomenal. Furthermore, we empirically show that a continuous biological factor (prenatal exposure to androgens) has a continuous effect on the duration of pre-aspiration in Tyneside English.

What is gender?

We just don’t know.

Lexically speaking, English consistently and traditionally encodes male (he), female (she), a genderless plural (they), and a non-human singular (it). Colloquially, they can also be singular, as can them, although there is plenty of debate around whether it’s truly treated as singular (Foertsch & Gernsbacher 1997, Sanford & Filik 2007, Doherty & Conklin 2017). However, they and them are entirely ambiguous between the singular and traditional plural meanings. I’m investigating themself, which is a nonstandard but (definitively?) singular version of the pronoun. Importantly, as a reflexive anaphor, it must be bound by an antecedent so as an experimenter, I can control what it obligatorily corefers with. This makes it very easy to pair themself (or themselves) with a specific referent whose gender (or gender bias, or lack thereof) can be manipulated. For instance, names, definite and indefinite noun phrases, and indefinite pronouns can be used to test whether different gender biases affect the acceptability of the coreference dependency.

If the Gender Mismatch Effect stems from the genders of two words being incompatible, then we must define what genders are incompatible. Superficially, this is easy because male and female are nice, neat categories, but they aren’t the only genders (and increasingly, are not the only categories). However, if singular they can match in gender with a binary-gender word (either male or female), then we’ve got to be a lot more precise about what we mean when we say the genders of two words match or mismatch, since they is ostensibly gender-neutral. On the other hand, if singular they can’t match in gender with a binary-gender word, but it can match with a gender-neutral word, then maybe we are encoding a third gender category, rather than the absence of gender. This raises the question of how pronouns and gender categories will continue to evolve, if natural gender is gradient but our lexical encoding of it is categorical.

In any case, these are just a few of the possible ways in which gender might be encoded in English, and there is much work to be done.

Influences on resolution of temporary structural ambiguities

Good news! The ethics forms for the project are submitted, I know where the eye-tracker is and I’m applying for a small internal grant to get the pilots going. Everything is moving at a pleasantly fast pace and I’m feeling like it’s all going to be possible. (I really can’t recommend highly enough getting together with a bunch of wonderful colleagues for a regular writing group. It really lifts the spirits!)

In short, the first set of experiments I’m getting of the ground are the ones examining the influence of non-grammatical gender on the parser’s behavior. Van Gompel and Liversedge (2003), for instance, show that gender and number are lexical features that are only checked after a long distance dependency is formed. This is what makes the Gender Mismatch Effect (GMME) such a great tool for real-time sentence processing studies — the mismatch can cause the parser to apparently slow down while it revises or repairs its mistake. What I want to know, though, is how flexible this gender-checking mechanism is. As Frazier et al. (2015) notes, in reference to the possible [un]grammaticality of sentences with ‘gender mismatches’:

[I]t is not unimaginable that a woman might be named Steven, merely very unexpected, and likewise in the context of a costume party, the individual picked out by the referring expression the cowgirl could conceivably be male.

Moreover, there are people who do not identify as men or women, but as some non-binary gender (of which there are many). Thus, the assumptions underlying many studies that use gender mismatch to test, e.g., long-distance dependency formation may rely on a gender binary that is not sociologically or biologically valid. To be fair, a large proportion of Western populations only have experience with cisgender people, thus rarely have occasion to process sentences that contain non-binary pronouns. But, as Frazier and colleague point out, this type of real-life gender mismatch can occur anywhere costume parties occur, which is presumably a much larger proportion of the population than those who are familiar with non-binary gender identities.

So, I will be testing whether the GMME is something that is flexible that can be mitigated with exposure to non-binary and ‘nonstandard’ uses, or whether it is something rigid that is acquired at a young age* and is difficult to adapt to new experiences and knowledge. Both cases could have implications for how to positively change societal treatment of people who want to be referred to with non-binary pronouns. Both cases could also inform theories of how the parser assimilates non-linguistic (or paralinguistic) information during real-time sentence processing.

(*I assume that many to most people who are familiar with non-binary gender identities learned about them well after the critical period, based on the broad societal attitude toward transgender and non-binary/gender-queer people in Western cultures.)

… and I’ve arrived!

After some administrative hoops, several thousand miles of flying, and dozens of miles of walking, I am here, at Newcastle University!

I am now a postdoctoral Research Associate in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics. For the next three years, I will be investigating, in collaboration with Dr. Joel Wallenberg, how the real-time representation of syntactic structure is influenced by (at least two) sources of information. Those two sources are: (1) prosody, and in particular, prosodic boundaries that are typically associated with syntactic clause boundaries; and (2) observed, deduced, or assumed information about the gender of human referents in the sentence, in particular exploring variation associated with the comprehender’s (reader’s or listener’s) exposure to and experience with people who are of a nonbinary gender. As these projects progress, I will update my research pages with more information.
